Download and read online Advances in Plant Glycosides Chemistry and Biology in PDF and EPUB In the plant kingdom a variety of chemical constituents occur in a glycoside form (conjugation with sugar). Glycosides are important, secondary metabolites. The structural diversity is a result of the vast amount of varieties and stereochemical configurations of the sugar component. Aglycones belong to terpenoid, steroid, flavonoid, quinonoid, lignan, other simple phenolics, and isothiocyanate. However, biological activities of glycosides are, in many cases, susceptible to the nature of sugar moieties, even though their aglycone is the same. Since the 80s, plant glycosides have been attracting an increasing volume of interest from botanists and phytochemists world-wide for the following reasons: • They are difficult to isolate and purify • They have a very important biological function in plant life and remarkable biological activities • They are a very important resource of natural medicine, health food, cosmetics and food supplements. The first International Symposium on Plant Glycosides (ISPG), held in Kunming, China was attended by more than 150 scientists from 17 countries. During the four day meeting, 96 reports on plant glycosides, including structure elucidation, ethnobotany, pharmacology, quantitative evaluation, synthesis, pharmacology and biotechnology were presented. 54 of these papers are given in this volume. All these papers review recent research results on plant glycosides.

If Not For Jim

Author: Kenny Ray Hatton

Download and read online If Not For Jim in PDF and EPUB Who could rack up seven gold medals, six International Champion Director pins, spend twenty-five years with one chorus, win another gold medal with a second chorus, and never accept a dime of salary? Why, famed Director of the Louisville Thoroughbred Chorus, Jim Miller, of course. How did he do it? What were his philosophies, his perspectives, his prayers? What were the secrets to his success, and what, pray tell, was the “barbershop etiquette” that he demanded be observed at every rehearsal, show and competition? In this incredible biography, Kenny Ray Hatton, lead singer of the International Championship quartet, The Bluegrass Student Union, tells the story of the making of a master...a master director, as well as a quartet-singer who performed in thirty-seven states, three provinces in Canada and overseas. Read the story of a man who served as soldier, teacher, coach and mentor... his triumphs and travails — like the time he co-signed a bank loan to finance a trip to a competition-loss — and the episode where his quartet was brought up on ethics charges for singing “Time to Dance” at a religious school. Turns out, those Methodists didn’t believe in dancing! This, for a man who took tap-and ballet-lessons as a child. Yet, nothing compares with the dramatic time spent in a German prisoner-of-war camp and with his quartet’s USO-tour of Vietnam. See the “no-holds-barred” comments about fellow chorus- and quartet-members; the advice, the adventures and the aspirations of the man who knew how to build winning teams, whether it was on the football field or the show-stage....a man known to say things like, “Believe me, I want to do everything your way, just as long as your way also happens to be my way.” So what was Jim Miller’s way? Growing up as a “barbershop brat,” I saw my share of concerts, competitions and conventions. Yet one man stands out in the history of the Barbershop Harmony Society and that man’s life and times are eloquently captured in this thoroughly enjoyable memoir, "If not for Jim."

Download and read online A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet in PDF and EPUB There’s nothing quite like family—for good or bad. But in a world where we sometimes know more about the Kardashians than we do the people sleeping right down the hall, it’s easy to forget that walking through life with our family offers all sorts of joy wrapped up in the seemingly mundane. There’s even a little bit of sacred sitting smack-dab in the middle of the ordinary. And since time’s-a-wastin’, we need to be careful that we don’t take our people—and their stories—for granted. Whether it’s a marathon bacon-frying session, a road trip gone hysterically wrong, or a mother-in-law who makes every trip to the grocery store an adventure, author Sophie Hudson reminds us how important it is to slow down and treasure the day-to-day encounters with the people we love the most. Written in the same witty style as Sophie’s BooMama blog, A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet is a cheerful, funny, and tender account of Sophie’s very Southern family. It’s a look into the real lives of real people—and a real, loving God right in the middle of it all.
